Ultrasonic Testing of material Composite and Metallic
The control by means of ultrasound is a non-destructive method that allows to highlight the volumetric defects of a material, through the introduction of high-frequency waves.

Ultrasonic inspection relies on the transmission and reflection of sound waves at different interfaces (both internal and external) in a material or component being examined. The amount of sound transmitted or reflected is dependent on the mismatch of acoustic impedance at each interface as well as the amount of energy reaching the interface. A material discontinuity results in such an interface, and both the size and impedance difference of the discontinuity affect the amount of energy reflected. Reflectivity increases as both the impedance mismatch and size of the discontinuity increases. Acoustic impedance is the product of a material’s density and its acoustic velocity (which is affected by its modulus of elasticity).

The orientation of potential discontinuities in relation to the sound beam is of primary importance when developing a technique. Defects will be detected only if the major boundary surface is lying perpendicular to the axis of the ultrasonic beam. The detection capability is further influenced by test equipment characteristics, component material properties, surface finish, and geometry and the test procedure.

The non-transparency of ultrasonic materials is linked mainly due to the structural characteristics of the material
